SSR Selfie | Attract and Repel

Attract and Repel is a book about magnets. It is made by Jennifer Boothroyd and it's illustrated by her too. I learnt interesting facts about magnets. An interesting fact I learnt was that Lodestone is a natural magnet. The book was very good and I didn't know that much about magnets besides knowing that things that are metal are attracted to it.

Shelters

Shelters are a type of base to protect people from emergency events like natural disasters.

Materials that can go against water disasters are reinforced concrete and steel frame.

Those materials are good because steel frame are recommended for vertical evacuation structures and it's quite strong.

Materials that can go against fire disasters are metal and aluminium foil.

Those materials are good because metal is strong and the foil doesn't burn easily so it can last a long time.

These a materials that can and should be used for when a fire or water disaster happens.

Touch Rugby | Kiwi Sport

This week for Touch rugby we learnt how to plant the ball. Planting the ball is when you place the ball and step over it. The person behind you grabs the ball and you have to step back so the person can pass the ball to you. You have to step back so it's not a forward pass.

We also played a game of scoop tag. To play there is 2 teams. The non-bibs and the bibs. What happens is the people with the ball have to run. The people without the ball have to tag a person from the other team. If you get touched you plant the ball. Which means you place the ball on the ground and step over it. The person who tagged you takes the ball and run. You cannot tag the person who tagged you back.

Touch was fun today and I loved playing scoop tag. I recommend other people should play it because its very fun.

Kupu Revision

This week for Maori I had to translate English words into Maori words. We also translated Maori places into English. We played a game with sticks.

The first activity we did was similar to the one from last week. We searched words like Roto which means River and Awa which means lake. First we translated Maori words into English words. Then we translated places in Maori into English. Finally we checked the words to see if it was right.

The next activity we did was with sticks. We made a circle and we had to move our sticks in a direction. When someone says Maui we let go of our stick and grab the stick on our left. When someone says Katau we let go of our stick and grab the stick on our right. When someone says Waho we put our stick outside of the circle. When someone says Roto we put our sticks inside of the circle.

This activity was alright because we did a similar activity from last week and I already knew some words from last week as well. I also had fun playing games with the sticks.

Building | Maths

Building is a job that uses measurement, counting and multiplication.

Building uses measurement so it can measure the materials length and height. It can also be used to measure how much material the builder wants to cut off.

Building uses counting to find the right amount of material the builders want on their building.

Building uses multiplication to find how much material the builder needs.  If the builders mess it up it will be a waste of material and a waste of money. That is why they need to use multiplication, so that they can get an exact amount.

Builders need to use these types of maths to make the right building.

Persuasive Speech (WIP)

This week for writing I planned out my speech about why kids should be allowed to game as much as they want.

First I had to come up with a greeting. Next I wrote down my introduction for my speech. Then I made a rhetorical question. After that I wrote down my opinion about my argument.

Then I researched some facts about why kids should play games longer. The facts I've learnt from websites were very interesting and I also found out that when your playing games you can develop some things. After writing down my facts I wrote a solution to that problem.

Then finally I wrote down a text about what happens if people disagree with my opinion.

I found this activity interesting but I feel a little bit nervous once I have to say my speech. I do feel good about the information I found because I think its good enough to persuade most people.

Novel Study | The Twits

The Twits were an ugly couple who would play pranks on each other.

Mr Twit pranks Mrs Twit by adding layers of wood to Mrs Twits stick. Mr Twit would take Mrs Twit stick downstairs to his shed and add wood to Mrs Twit stick. Mrs Twit didn't notice it and Mr Twit told Mrs Twit that she was shrinking. During that Mr Twit also added wood to Mrs Twits chair so it looks like she is actually shrinking.

Mr Twit had an idea. Mr twit tied Mrs Twit to balloons and her feet to the ground to make her stretch her body so she could become more taller. Mr Twit kept on adding balloons eventually he cut of the strings on the ground and made Mrs Twit fly up into the sky.

The book is very good because the way the couple play pranks each other is very funny, this should be recommended for kids.

Comment Thread

A comment thread is an conversation where it can be found in the comment section.

When commenting start with a greeting for example "Hi" or "Talofa".

Next give some positive feedback for example "I really like the strategies you and your group were using to find out the answer to the question."

Then end it with an open question. For example "What other types of strategies can you use to solve a maths problem?"

Comment threading is a good way to have an conversation over something and use your own knowledge.

Basic Facts Boxes

Today I attempted the Speed demon challenge. I did multiplication. I got all my boxes correct and it took me 4 minutes and 32 seconds to complete it. I think I could of had a faster time but I’m alright with this and I was also lucky with my answers since I didn’t know some of the answers.

Touch Rugby

Today we learned some basic skills for touch rugby. First we learned how to tap the ball, catch and pass the ball. Afterwards we played passing drills to get better at committing to the ball and catching. I had a fun experience of passing, catching and scoring the ball.

Keeping it warm and cool

Insulators are used to block heat from escaping. There was 5 different materials to use to find the coolest and warming material: polystyrene, metal, paper, plastic and glass.

The coolest materials are plastic, paper and tin. Which means those materials were a bad insulator.

The most warming materials are paper and polystyrene. Which means those materials are good insulators.

Polystyrene is the best materials out of both experiments because it kept everything cool and warm.

Kupu

For Maori I had to search the English meanings of Maori words.

Some Maori words I learnt during this activity is Tangata Whenua. Tangata Whenua means natural or people of the land. Next I highlighted the English words to show that its correct. After that activity I had to match Maori words with pictures.

I found this activity fun because it was cool to find the meaning of Maori words.

SSR Selfie | Lost Animals

My book is called Lost Animals. Its created by David Orme and illustrated by Jorge Mongiovi. Lost Animals is about animals that are extinct. Some animals that are extinct are Indricotherium, Uintatherium, The dodo. 3 facts that I got from the book was that Tree frogs are the most rarest frogs in the world. The Dodo bird lives in Mauritius and Tasmanian Tigers were extinct in 1936. The most interesting thing I learnt in the book is that Tree frogs are the most rarest frogs in the world and Indricotherium were alive 35 million years ago.

Brainstorming

For writing I had to brainstorm some ideas to make a persuasive speech about. Texas and I read a text about why a person didn't want a statue to be taken down. We brainstormed reasons on why the statue shouldn't be taken down. One of those reasons were because it would be a waste of money. Brainstorming is thinking about a bunch of ideas. Next I wrote down 3 headings I could make a topic about. Those 3 headings were School, Home and Community. I added 3 arguments under those topics for my argument. Then I chose 2 arguments to make my persuasive speech. I chose gaming as my topic and my argument was Kids should be allowed to game as much as they want.

The Twits

The Twits were an ugly couple who would play pranks on each other.

Mr Twit prank Mrs Twit by hiding a frog in Mrs Twit's sheets. When Mrs Twit went in bed and turned her light off she started scratching herself because she was itchy. Mrs Twit got very scared so she fainted. Mr Twit went to get cold water to pour on her. When Mr Twit poured the water the frog jumped on Mrs Twit's face.

Mrs Twit wanted her revenge so she went to prank Mr Twit. She got a tin and went to the garden to get worms. Mrs Twit made the worms look like spaghetti. When it was time to eat Mr Twit ate the worms. He didn't notice because it looked like worm but he said that it taste squishy and bitter. When Mrs Twit told Mr twit that it was worms he was horrified.

The book is very good because the way the couple play pranks each other is very funny, this should be recommended for kids.
