SSR Selfie | Speed Machines

In my SSR Selfie activity I read a book called Speed Machines. Speed machines is made by Miranda Smith and illustrated by James Dyson. Speed Machines is about vehicle world records.

3 facts I learnt from the book was that the fastest jet in the world is called the Thrust SSC. The Thrust SSC goes up to 1,227.99km/h. Another fact I learnt in the book was the the strongest construction vehicle is called the Giant Excavators. The Giant Excavators could hold 345 tonnes of dirt. The last fact I learnt in the book was the fastest bullet train in the world is called the Shanghai Maglev. It's located in Pudong, Shanghai, China. The Shanghai Maglev can go up to 430km/h.

The Shanghai Maglev fact is most interesting one out of all of the facts in the book. I recommend kids to read these type of books because its very good to learn about special events.

Kiwi Sport | Touch Rugby

We carried on practising two and three man settles and we learnt how to drive the ball.

First we practised two and three man settles to get ready for a game of touch. Coach Mark told us to aim for one person when we drive the ball down the field.

Next we played a game of touch. The game was for learning how to play and how to use a two and three man settle.

I had fun playing touch but I was exhausted the whole time. I was exhausted because when we had to defend we had to run and align ourselves with Coach Mark.

Shelter Materials

There are different types of shelters that have different materials that can stand against natural disasters. Materials that could go through storms are materials like concrete, wool and steel frames.

Concrete can be used for the outside layer because water can’t go through the concrete which is good.

Wool can be used for the middle layer because wool can keep the coldness of wind out of the shelter which makes the shelter warm.

Steel frames can be good to hold up the shelter because steel frames are strong to hold up something and if there’s nothing under the roof it might fall down.

Knowing which materials are good for the right disaster it’s important because an emergency shelter with the right materials can save people's lives.

Maori | Conversations & Names

Our activity was that we had to translate Maori names of people and conversations.

First thing we did was translate the Maori names. We were not allow to use Maori Dictionary so we guessed. We knew that L and D is R, V is W, J and S is H in the Maori alphabet. Some names we guessed correctly was Hune which means June and Heni or Heeni which means Jane.

Next task I did was translating conversations. This time we were allowed to use the Maori Dictionary to search up words that we didn't know.

The Maori names activity was easy because we've done the same task before so we remember most of the names we already did. The Maori conversation task was a little bit difficult because some words didn't have the English translation so we had to research the word.

Fraction, percentages and decimals

Fraction are equal pieces of a whole that have been divided.

Percentages are the ratio of a fraction of 100.

Decimals are numbers that share a value but is separated from a dot called the decimal.

Fractions has a numerator and denominator. The numerator is the amount of pieces the person have and the denominator is the number that the whole has been divided by.

Equivalent fractions are fractions that have the same value. Equivalent fraction example: 1/2 = 2/4

Improper fractions are fractions but the numerator is greater than the denominator. Improper fraction example: 2/4 = 4/8

To find a fractions of a set take a number like 24. Then try and find two thirds of 24. First thing to do is find 1 third of 24. So you do 24 divided by 3 which equals 8 (24 ÷ 3 = 8) Then you do 8 times 2 which equals 16 ( 8 x 2 = 16) . So then two thirds of 24 is 16.

Novel Study | The Twits

The Twits are a ugly couple who would play pranks on each other.

Muggle-Wump, other monkeys and the Roly-Poly bird discuss about their revenge plan on the Twits. The Roly-poly bird and some monkeys carry a bucket of paint and threw the paint onto the house. Muggle-Wump and the rest of the monkey use glue to put The Twits furniture on their ceiling.

When the Twits return from work they saw the house. They were shocked so they went into their shed and grabbed their guns and searched outside. When they found nothing outside they went inside of their house. When they went inside their house they saw all of their furniture on the ceiling.

They found no one so when they went outside again they felt something dripping on their heads. It was the birds with paint brushes, they were hanging out on top of the roof waiting for the Twits to come out again. When the Twits found out they tried to shoot them but the birds flew away in time.

The book is very funny because the way the couple play pranks on each other. This is a book that lots of people would enjoy. I recommend other people reading this.

Kapa Haka Performance

Ls1 attended a Kapa Haka performance in our school hall.

The Kapa Haka group came into our school hall and performed a dance and they were singing Waiata as their entrance. Some of the things we observed in their entrance was that one of the Kapa Haka members blew a Maori traditional horn called the Putatara. Another thing we saw was that another Kapa Haka member talked about the meaning of the Haka and the traditional Maori weapons.

The last thing we did was play a game called Matau and Maui. To play the game you need sticks (The sticks we used were called Rakau). Then a person says Maui or Matau. If the person says Maui we have to grab the stick on our left side. If the person says Matau we have to grab the stick on our right side.

The last thing the Kapa Haka did in their performance was that they performed a Haka. Then our (Panmure Bridge school) Kapa Haka group responded with their own Haka and we sang He Honore.

I enjoyed experiencing the performance from the Kapa Haka group. My favourite part about their performance was their Haka and how our school Kapa Haka group responded with their own Haka.

Maori

This week for our Maori session we learnt different volcanoes and weathers in Maori.

The first thing I did was match the Maori names with English names. Most of the names are of mountains that used to be volcanoes. I used Maori dictionary to help me. Examples: Mt St John/Te Kopuke, Motutapu/Te Motu-tapu-o-Tinirau, Mt Richmond/ Otahuhu.

Lastly I matched the Maori weathers with the pictures. I also used Maori dictionary to help me match them together. Example: Rainy/He ua, cloudy, He kapua, hail, He us whatu.

I had fun doing this activity, it took me a while to understand each translation.

Touch Rugby | Kiwisport

This week session at kiwi sport we practised using our skills that we learnt for the past 4 weeks.

Before we started a game of touch we practised doing 2 and 3 man settle. When we started playing we mainly used the 2 and 3 man settle technique.

Our attacks were good but our defence were alright. Every time dummy half touched the ball we would go forward and touch them. If you touch a dummy half then that a hand over. We got multiple tries.

At the end we were all exhausted from the sun. It was very sunny that day but we all had fun playing touch and we were proud of the way we did the 2 man settle and the 3 man settle.

Print Advertising

Print Advertising is advertising a product.

An advertisement needs these effects to make them look persuasive.

Some effects advertisement uses are things like Static image. Static image is when an image is frozen and while the image is frozen, products are being shown as well as the price.

Another effect advertisements use are slogans. Slogans are phrases that companies use to support there company.

Advertisements need to use these special effect to persuade people to buy their product.

Model Material

This week we have been learning about different materials for models that can go against natural disasters.

First, we had to brainstorm and think of what materials can help us when natural disasters are happening.

Next, we had to choose our materials that we needed to build our shelters. Our group chose: Reinforced concrete, wood, vinyl, and stone.

Afterwards, we needed to find the height and the width for the walls and the roof. The walls were 21.1cm for the height and 14.5cm for the width. For the roof the width was 20.1cm and the height was also 20.1 cm.

Lastly, we wrote our materials we need, how much do we need, and the height and width.

I really enjoyed finding different materials that can go up against different natural disasters.

Statistical Investigation

This week for Maths we had to find the average of each team of athletics day.

First thing we did was find out how many points each team had in each class. Next we added those points to find each teams total points. Then we added all the points of each team and tried to find the mean (average) by dividing the total points by 9.

A way of finding the mean faster is by using multiplication.

Here's an example: If there is 2, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 then do this. (2x2) + (3x4) + (5x6) = ???. If you're wondering on how to add this then do this is how. 2 x 2 = 4, 3 x 4 = 12, 5 x 6 = 30. Then add all these numbers up: 4 + 12 + 30 = 46. 46 is how much points a team got.

This activity was hard because we had to figure out the answer ourselves without using the calculator or any type of thing to find the answer. I still had fun because of how much I improved on my addition skills to find out the answers.

Novel Study | The Twits

The Twits are an ugly couple who would play pranks on each other.

In the book Muggle-wump and other monkeys free themselves from the cage. The monkeys then go and help the birds flee from Mr Twit who glued the roof so he could capture the birds to make bird pie.

The Roly-Poly bird helped the monkeys by carrying a bucket of dead buzzards, magpies, rooks, ravens and many more dead birds. The Roly-Poly bird and the monkeys tipped the bucket out on to the rood to scare the other birds away. Then the Roly-Poly bird leads the birds away from the roof.

The book is very funny because the way the couple play pranks on each other. This is a book that lots of people would enjoy. I recommend other people reading this.

Manaiakalani Film festival

I went to the Manaiakalani Film festival event.

When we arrived inside the theatre we sat quietly and waited for the movie to start.

My favourite film was the rap that one of the Tamaki college student did. The rap was called Stay at Home. I liked the beat they used, it was very cool. I even commented on their video.

I enjoyed my time at the Manaiakalani Film Festival and I am proud of the one that we made, COVID

Persuasive Speeches

I presented my speech about kids being allowed to game as much as they want.

Before saying our speeches, a group of people who finished their speeches started practising.

When it was my turn to say my speech I was nervous at first. I then started gaining confidence and I finished my whole speech.

My teacher told me that my reasons and facts and statistics were good.

I felt very good after saying my speech. I think I persuaded most people with my speech. I also liked the feed back that my teacher gave me.

The Twits

The Twits are an ugly couple who would play pranks on each other.

Mr Twit was waiting for birds to sit on the tree so he can have bird pie. The monkeys try to warn the birds but they couldn't because they spoke a different language which the birds didn't understand.

The monkeys thought the birds were going to get eaten but then the Roly-Poly bird flew down. The monkeys asked the Roly-Poly bird to warn the other birds. When Mr Twit came out all the birds were on top of the cage.

Maori Names - Rua

In our Maori session we had to guess and match the names of people in Maori and English.

Some of Maori names sounded similar to the English names.

Some Maori names didn't sound similar because the Maori alphabet doesn't use letters like L,D,V,S and J.

Then we checked to see if our answers were correct.

I found this activity alright because we've done a similar activity for the past 4 weeks.

Basic Facts Boxes

Today I did my basic fact boxes. I did the speed demon challenge. The speed demon challenge is a time challenge where you answer each question as fast as you can. Once all questions are answered you stop the timer. I did multiplication. I got 37 answers correct and 23 incorrect. I think I could’ve done better because I’ve learnt about multiplication for the past 4 years and I’ve tried to memorise it.

Sharing Knowledge

For this weeks Maths activity we partnered up with people and learnt about what they learnt about their struggle. I learnt about addition and subtraction and geometry.

Addition is adding things up and subtraction is taking things away. My partner taught me how to use addition and subtraction in written algorithm. Written algorithm is a type of maths strategy that can be used for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

During this session of learning about addition and subtraction, my partner taught me how to use place value. To do addition and subtraction, using the place value strategy you write a number and put each digit in the right value. Then you do the same with the other number then add them up. Obviously if there a 2 digit number in one of the values you have to give the 10 to the next value.

Geometry is using 2d and 3d shapes. 2d shapes are a flat shape that has faces and corners. 3d shapes are shapes that have many faces, vertices and edges. I also learnt the only direction that 2d shapes go are up, down, left and right. The only directions 3d shapes go are up, down, left, right, front and backwards.

My partner also taught me about different things that 2d and 3d shapes can do. 2d and 3d shapes can rotate to get a different image or angle of the shape. 2d and 3d shapes have a reflection. A reflection (in geometry) is flipping the shape the opposite way. I also learnt that 2d and 3d shapes can transform. Transforming is changing the position of the shape.

I think I was an alright teacher. My explanation wasn't that good when explaining about measurements but I think me explaining about time was good because my partner understood me. My partner was a good student and they were good teachers to me as well.

Persuasive speech

For Writing we wrote down our persuasive speech.

In my speech I had to introduce myself. Then I had to introduce my topic and say our rhetorical question. After that I had to write down my POV (Point of view) and why I believe in my argument. Next I wrote down reasons on why kids should be able to play games when they want and how long they want. I also researched facts to support my reason. After that I wrote a solution for the situation. Finally I wrote down a summary for my speech.

This task was so fun. I had fun researching the facts. Now I feel confident to say my speech because of the information I found. I feel like the information I found is good enough to convince most people.

Emergency Shelter

This week for inquiry we were creating our own emergency shelter. An emergency shelter is a place that protects people from natural disasters.

First we looked at different types of shelters that are in different shapes. We had to figure out if they were a good or bad shelter.

Next we thought and discussed what the shape of our shelter would be. My group decided that the shape should be a triangle. We thought this would be a good shelter against strong wind.

Then we created our own shelter on sketch up. This app is used to create 3d models.

After that we discussed which material would do best if this shelter was going to be created in real life. The best material we could think of was Tungsten. Tungsten is a type of metal that is extremely rare to find. It cannot be broken either.

If we could change specific things in our shelter, the things we would change are adding windows to see, another entrance to our shelter and probably taking out the legs and ropes.

We found this task difficult because it was hard trying to design our shelter but it was very fun because we like each other's ideas even though we weren’t able to add those features in.

Touch Rugby | Kiwi sport

Today's session for Touch Rugby was learning how to do a two man settle and three man settle.

A two man settle is when one person plants the ball. Then the person behind that planter grabs the ball and pass it back to the person who plant the ball.

A three man settle is when one person plants the ball. Then second person grabs the ball and then passes it to the third person.

We then practice using that new skill in a game of touch. We only walked for a little bit but then progressed into jogging.

I had lots of fun learning how to do the two man settle and the three man settle. I also like the cooperation between my team.

Time

Time can be told in lots of ways, here are ways on how to tell time.

Analogue time uses hands to tell time. 1 hand counts the seconds, 1 hand counts the minutes and 1 hand counts the hours.

Digital time uses am and pm. Am means At morning and Pm means past morning. Midnight is am which mean the time should be 0000. Midday is pm which means the time should 1200.

24 hour time mainly uses zero's. The time starts at 0000 and ends at 2359. It also uses am and pm.

Another way telling time is using fractions. Visualise a clock as a quarter (or a fraction). One piece is how far the time goes.

Another way to tell time is using written algorithm. This is how it can be used: If its 10:37 and dinner is in 2 hours. Add 60 mins to 10:37 to make 11:37. Then add another 60 mins to 11:37 to make 12:37. That is 2 hours used. Now add 17 to 37 to make 54. That means dinner is at 12:57.

Duffy Theatre - Bex meets Milly

We watched a performance by Duffy theatre group about the Coggen. A Coggen is a mythical creature that is a mixture of a Cat, dog and a chicken.

Before the show, the actors introduced themselves. Then we sang the Duffy song. Then the actors performed for us. Lastly the Duffy group held a question and answer session.

The performance by the Duffy Theatre crew was amazing. I liked how they timed everything and how they got the Coggen running around.

Maori Names

In our Maori session, we translated Maori names into English. Our activity was searching up Maori names by using the Maori dictionary. We also had to make a poster about the directions in Maori.

Some Maori names sounded very similar to English names. Some of the Names we learned about were: Hamuera which means Samuel, and Huhana which means Susan. The rest of our list of words were new to us.

Next we made a slideshow that shows directions in Maori. We also added pictures to show the directions. Mua means in front, Muri means behind, Maui means to the left, and Matau means to the right.

These activities were very interesting and fun. My favourite part about today’s session was making the slide show for the directions in Maori.

Novel Study | The Twits

The Twits are a ugly couple who would play pranks on each other.

While Mrs Twit was in the air she decided to bite all the strings off to get down. When she bit it all off she fell. She fell on top of Mr Twit and threaten him that she will get him back.

Every Wednesday Mr and Mrs Twit would have bird pie for supper. He would glue birds to the old tree and then catch them. Once he caught all of them he would cook them up and then make them into a pie.

The book is very funny because the way the couple play pranks on each other. This is a book that lots of people would enjoy. I recommend other people reading this.
