Knowledge Hazards and Risks

For inquiry we were learning about hazards and risk. First we did activities. The first activity was four corners. We had to go to a corner, the corners were spades, diamonds, clubs and hearts and the person had to pick a card if it was spades, diamonds, clubs and hearts. The last two people had to guess if the card is red or black. 

The second activity was octopus. The two people that are in it had to say something and the person had to run to the end, and if they got tagged they had to be an octopus. 

Next we had to list down names of hazards for each category (School, home,community, sports). 

Lastly, we had to come up with some risks for our hazards.

Gruffalo Character

Character descriptions talk about the characters personality, appearance and experiences. Character descriptions can also use figurative and literal language.

Experiences describes where the character lives, their hobbies, special achievements and family and friends.  

Appearance describes the character's face and hair, their body, clothes. 

Personality describes what type of person the character is, how the character behaves, how the character speaks and what makes the character different. 

Writing character descriptions helps practise visualising and using figurative language and descriptive adjectives.

Comparison Venn Diagram

Similarities and differences are found by using a Venn diagram. The Dippy Dinners Drippers is about a family who are messy eaters. Space Food is about what to do when sending food in space.

The similarities in both of the texts is that they're both narratives.

The differences in those text is that one is talking about a family who are messy eaters, where as the other is about what to do when sending food in space.

Similarities and differences helps me separate ideas from the book.

L.I: To understand text by using reciprocal reading

Swimming | Kiwisport

Today I practised my water safety skills that I learned from last week at the YMCA lagoon pool.

The first skill I practised was Streamline. All I did was put my arms up high straight and behind my ears.

The second skill I practised was Freestyle. What I did was fast kicking and did slow strokes.

The third skill I practised was Rolling. What I did was kick 6 times and turned around and floated on my back.

Lastly I practised diving. All I did was dive diagonally.

The skills I practised were fun. I found streamline difficult to do.

Figurative Language

Figurative language is deducing the meaning of what a person said.

There's 5 different figurative languages. 

A simile is comparing 2 things by using "like" or "as".

A metaphor is comparing 2 things without using "like" or "as".

A personification is giving human traits to objects and ideas. 

A hyperbole is exaggerating to show strong feelings or ideas.

A understatement is expressing with less strength than expected (the opposite of hyperbole).

L.I: To start a conversation

I replied to Spelman's comment on my Strategies of solving blog post. He asked me if the activity helped me get better at solving maths questions by using other strategies. I said yes because I didn't know there would be other ways of solving a maths question. I asked him "Do you think that there is more strategies that my group and I could have used?". Now I'm waiting for his reply.

L.I: To remember basic maths facts

I did the speed demon challenge. The speed demon challenge is about answering Maths questions as fast as you can. I did this up to 5. It took me 4 minutes and 40 seconds to complete all of the Maths questions. I found this challenge really easy and I think I can do the speed demon challenge up to 10.
