Comment thread

L.I: To start a conversation

I replied to Spelman's comment on my Strategies of solving blog post. He asked me if the activity helped me get better at solving maths questions by using other strategies. I said yes because I didn't know there would be other ways of solving a maths question. I asked him "Do you think that there is more strategies that my group and I could have used?". Now I'm waiting for his reply.

Basic fact boxes

L.I: To remember basic maths facts

I did the speed demon challenge. The speed demon challenge is about answering Maths questions as fast as you can. I did this up to 5. It took me 4 minutes and 40 seconds to complete all of the Maths questions. I found this challenge really easy and I think I can do the speed demon challenge up to 10.

100 things to know about the human body| SSR Selfie

L.I: To summarise and retell a text
I read a book called "100 things to know about the human body". Its about the human body and what happens to the body parts. I found some interesting facts like when your eyes turn yellow its a sign that your live isn't working properly. I also found new words like pneumonia. Pneumonia is an infection made by bacteria, viruses and fungi. The pneumonia goes to either one of your lungs or both of your lungs. I found this book interesting and educational because it taught me about how body parts works and what happens to it when a infection starts.

Strategies of Solving

For Maths my group and I answered maths questions. What we did was use as many different strategies to answer each question. Some of the strategies we used were number line, written algorithm and place value.

The first set of maths questions were addition and subtraction. The first question was 84 - 7. What we did was use different strategies for example splitting numbers. What we did with the splitting numbers was do 84 - 4 to make 80. From 80 I subtracted 3 to make 77 and that is the answer. 84 - 7 = 77.

The next set of maths questions were multiplication and division. The first question was 5x5. One of the strategies we were using was skip counting in 5's which means we went 5,10,15,20,25. 25. We already knew 5x5 was 25 so that was our answer.

I found this activity fun and difficult because I sometimes got confused on what to do on one of the strategies we were using but I still had fun doing it.

Synonyms

A synonym is a word that has a similar meaning to another word.

For example: Happy and joy. Happy means being positive. Joy means being happy. Happy and joy has a similar meaning, therefore happy and joy is a synonym.

Use verbs, nouns, adverbs and adjectives to get some synonyms.

Verbs are action words for example "make".

Nouns are words that are use to name things for example "man"

Adverbs are words that describe a verb for example "quickly".

Adjectives are words that describe something, for example "warm"

Verbs, noun, Adverbs and adjectives helps my vocabulary because there is more words that are similar to another word.

Explain that idiom

In my reading session I made videos using idioms. Idioms are phrases for example "class clown". Class clown means a student who likes making people laugh.

First my group and I chose 3 idioms to use for the video. Those idioms were "class clown", "when pigs fly" and "better late than never". "When pigs fly" is the idiom version for things that are impossible. "Better later than never" is the idiom version for when a person comes late but

Then we wrote down the meaning of each idiom and a script using the idioms. After that we recorded the video.

I found this activity fun because filming was funny and I felt proud about finishing the videos.

Swimming | Kiwisport

Today I had my first session for swimming this year. I was in James (My instructor) group. In that group I learnt how to do streamline kicking, submersion and butter fly, dolphin and frog kick.

I learnt how to do the streamline kick. To do the streamline kick you do little kicks to propel yourself forward and you do strokes to push yourself further.
I also learnt how to do the frog kick. What I did tuck in your leg and then you stretch your legs outwards and put your legs back together.

I also learnt the butterfly/dolphin kick. What I did was put my feet together and wiggle my body and shoulders up and down.

Lastly I learnt how to swim underwater. What I did was swim diagonally down to the bottom of the pool.

Tangrams

Today I learned how to make Tangrams, I rearrange the pieces to make animal shapes.

First I made a square pieces of paper because Tangrams are made from a big square.

Then I folded the square into various shapes and cut them out.

Lastly, i tried to make different animal shapes from the Tangram pieces.

I found this activity difficult and fun because I had some difficult moments when coming to folding and understanding what to do but I still manage to have fun during this activity.
