Strategies of Solving

For Maths my group and I answered maths questions. What we did was use as many different strategies to answer each question. Some of the strategies we used were number line, written algorithm and place value.

The first set of maths questions were addition and subtraction. The first question was 84 - 7. What we did was use different strategies for example splitting numbers. What we did with the splitting numbers was do 84 - 4 to make 80. From 80 I subtracted 3 to make 77 and that is the answer. 84 - 7 = 77.

The next set of maths questions were multiplication and division. The first question was 5x5. One of the strategies we were using was skip counting in 5's which means we went 5,10,15,20,25. 25. We already knew 5x5 was 25 so that was our answer.

I found this activity fun and difficult because I sometimes got confused on what to do on one of the strategies we were using but I still had fun doing it.

    1. Hi Spelman, Yes, this activity helped me get better at solving maths questions by using different strategies. Do you think that there is more strategies that my group and I could have used?

  4. Hello Leon,

Interesting blog post you have written. I found your strategies very helpful to answer hard questions. Can you describe what you found hard about this task?

    1. Hi Te Raumati,

I like your question. I found nothing hard about the activity because I already knew how to use each strategy. Which strategy do you find easier to use and why?

    2. Greetings Leon,

Thank you for replying back. I found skip counting in fives easy to use because I already know my 5 time tables. What do you think is the easiest strategy to solve a multiplication equation?

    3. Hello Te Raumati,

Interesting question you have asked. I think the easiest strategy to use is breaking time tables because all you do is multiply the ones and tens then add all your answers up to find your answer. Do you find multiplication hard, why?

  5. Hi Leon,

I really like the strategies you and your group were using to find out the answer to the question. Which strategy did you like the most?

    1. Hi Taua,

I like your question. My favourite strategy is place value and written algorithm because to me it was easy to do. Which strategy that you find easy?

    2. Hi Leon,

Out of the strategies you used in your activity. I find splitting numbers easy because I already learnt this strategy. When would you use the splitting numbers strategy?

    3. Hi Taua,

Interesting question. I would use splitting numbers in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. What other types of strategies can you use to solve a maths problem?
