Comment Thread

L.I: To give positive feedback on comments

Today Oscar commented on my homonyms and homographs blog post. At the end of Oscar comment he asked me if I used a site to find those homonyms and homographs. I replied to him saying "Yes!". I told him what site I used and I asked him a question. I asked him "How many homonyms and homographs do you know (excluding the homonyms & homographs and the blog post)?".

L.I: To summarise and retell a text

I read a book called Alex Rider: Skeleton Key. Its about a spy named Alex Rider and in this book he goes on a journey to find the Skeleton Key. The Main Characters in the story were Alex Rider, The General, Carlo and Mrs Jones. I had to list things that happen in the story and list words that I didn't know like Cylinders which means a solid figure.

Vollyball | Kiwisport

Setting is a kind of toss/throw and a ready position in volleyball.

The foot work for setting is having one foot in front of the other with knees bent. Then must have hands above the head in a diamond like shape and having elbows bent as well. The elbows have to be bent to catch the ball.
When releasing the ball, make sure knees and elbows are stretched out so the ball can be propelled. Make sure that when setting the ball, it ends up above your head.
Setting is a easy move to do because its a simple move to do when passing or tossing the ball.

Maori

L.I: To create a number chart using Te Reo Maori

For the Maori lesson was translating numbers from English to Maori. First, we translated the numbers: 14, 17, 15, 12, 18, 25, 33, 61, 74, 29, 20, 50, 90, 60, 30, 52, 86, 49, 93 and 38.

Next, we made a hundreds board with Maori numbers from 1-100.

I also had to explain the date, the weather and how I feel. The date is Raapa tekau o Pipiri which means Wednesday the 10th of June. The weather was sunny. To say sunny in Maori is Kua te whiti te ra. I feel cool. To say cool in Maori its Koangiangi.

Subtraction

For Maths we learnt how to do subtraction using place value. Subtraction is taking away from a number. I know 186 - 143 = 43.

First I broke up 143 into place values (One hundred, forty and three).

Next I subtracted the ones from 186. 186 - 3 = 183.

Then I subtracted the tens from 183. 183 - 40 = 143.

Finally I subtracted 100 from 173. 143 - 100 = 43.

So that means 186 - 143 =43.

Subtraction using place value is kind of easy.

Basic Facts

L.I: To remember basic maths facts

Today I did division on the basic facts boxes. I did the speed demon challenge which is about answering questions quickly. This took me 5 minutes and 21 seconds to complete all 90 question. At the end I got 77/90. I think I did a good job answering the questions and I think I could answer the questions a bit faster.

Aboriginal

For art I did Aboriginal art. Aboriginal art comes from Australia and in the art it tells a story. The story is told by symbols that has meanings to it.

I learnt how to make Aboriginal art using the dots and dragging technique. The dots technique is basically when you make dots to create symbols. The dragging technique is when you drag the cotton bud (Or any painting materials) to create symbols.

Last week I practised doing the dot and dragging technique. I made symbols on a piece of paper. When I was practising the dot technique I had to space the dots equally and try make the dots the same size. For the dragging technique, I only made symbols.

Then the next week I had to make the aboriginal art that is going to be on the wall. So I made my aboriginal art. First I traced out a cut out Koala. Next I designed and coloured the inside of my traced out Koala. Then I made symbols on the outside of my Koala and made symbols. The symbols I made is apart of a (customise) story of the Koala.

The Koala's story: The koala was walking on a hot day and then he fainted. Then the Koala woke up next to water and tried to drink it but then he woke up in the reality world and he spotted a hunter. The hunter walked up to the Koala with a weapon and he killed the Koala.

Light and Sound

In our inquiry session we were learning about the vocabulary of light and sound. Sound is the vibrations that can be heard by someone or something. Light is energy that makes things visible.

We first aligned words to the correct meaning. For example a word was transparent. We connected the meaning which was 'light can travel through'. My group and I understood the meaning because we had prior knowledge of transparent. There were three sites that could help us understand the definition of the words.

Our second activity was to find, draw, animate and act four words from the vocabulary list. We found photos of the words and wrote the definition. We drew the picture of a word. We animated the words that we couldn't get a picture of. Then for act we made a video of words that we also couldn't find a picture of.

I enjoyed this activity and learned the meaning of some words.

Homonyms & Homographs

L.I: To investigate Homonyms and Homographs

Homonyms are words that sound the same, spelt the same but mean different things. For example: Hail, Hail and Hail. The first Hail means small drops of ice. The other Hail means praising and the third Hail means to attract or call out someones attention.

Homographs are words that is spelt the same, sound different and mean different. For example: Row and Row. The first Row means a line or propelling a boat and the second Row means an argument.

Predictions

I made predictions on a book called Grandparents Day. Grandparents Day is about spending time with your grandparents. I had to predict whats going to happen in the book. Predict/prediction means making an educated guess about what will happen next in a text by using clues and prior knowledge that you already know.

One prediction I made in the book was that Isla is going to eat all the food in her pantry. When I read rest of the page she didn't end up finding the pantry. Instead she made muffins for her grandparents.

Another prediction I made was that someone might steal and eat the muffins at the grandparents picnic. Instead no one stole the muffin and the grandparents enjoyed their picnic.

My predictions were pretty bad because I got 2/6 predictions correct but it helped me have an understanding on the book.

SSR Selfie| Electricity

L.I: To summarise and retell a text

I read a book called Electricity. Its about how electricity works, what it has and what it does. In the book there is this character called Electricity. He explained about what electricity is, what static electricity is and how we use electricity. In this book I also learnt new words like Circuits. Circuits means a route, line or movement that starts and finishes at the same place. I found this book really fun to read and I think this could learn more people about electricity.

Basic Facts Boxes

L.I: To remember basic maths facts

Today I did the speed demon challenge on division. Speed demon is about answering all of the questions quickly. It took me 6 minutes and 54 seconds to answer all 90 division questions. My results were 71 out of 90. I found this challenge easy but because it took me a while to finish I think I can do this challenge quicker.
